One killed, four injured in accident in Mandi

Mandi, Oct 11 (UNI) One person was killed and four others seriously injured after a speeding truck hit their motorcycles in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh last evening, police sources today said.

The accident occurred at Chakkar, near milk plant in the district at about 2000 hrs, in which one person was killed on the spot and four others were seriously injured.

The sources said the speeding tipper ran over the people after hitting their motorcycles from behind, before speeding away from the scene of the accident.

The police officials chased the speeding truck and managed to arrest the driver, identified as Yadvinder, from Rajwari village after the local people informed them of the accident.

The injured have been admitted to the Regional Hospital here where doctors described their condition critical, the sources said, adding that the dead was identified as Chaman Lal.

His body was handed over to his relatives after post mortem examination, the sources added.

Meanwhile, a 31-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging herself in Kaloh Dhar village of the district on Karva Chautah yesterday, Sarkaghat DSP Vimal Gupta said.

He said according to her family members, Rooma Devi, who was being tortured by her in-laws, committed suicide on Karva Chauth, drawing public attention towards the torture she was being subjected to.

Her two brother-in-laws, Balam and Luhrau, have been arrested and a case under sections 498, 306 and 34 IPC has been registered against them, Mr Gupta added.
