Kolkata girl launches newspapers in Toronto
Kolkata, Oct 11: 'Amar Kolkata' and 'Eastern Horizon', two fortnightly tabloids in Bengali and English respectively, were launched from Toronto in Canada during Durga Puja by a woman entrepreneur who hails from the city.
Booboon Biswas, who was into event management during the 1980s and 1990s in Kolkata, migrated to Canada with her husband recently and chose the difficult task of bringing out a newspaper from the Canadian city teeming with Indians.
While Biswas brought out the Bengali edition with stories on Kolkata's Durga puja to the Singur turmoil, Sourav Ganguly and Bengali Bollywood stars like Bipasa Basu, Eastern Horizon was more focused on national and diaspora articles.
The content mostly was generated by Indian feature service Trans World Features which also has a content tie-up with SPAN magazine.
"Since people come to know the news in every corner of the globe instantly from TV and Internet now, my focus is not as much on hard news as features and other kinds of articles," she explained.
"The copies were sold instantly here at our Durga Puja stalls and now begins the task of keeping up the show," she said.
"It is an independant effort and people have so far responded generously here," she said.
