Farmers continue agitation in Gharsana
Sriganganagar, Oct 11 (UNI) Farmers at Gharsana in Rajasthan's Ganganagar district today congregated outside the Sub-Divisional Magistrate's office here demanding more share of irrigation water.
Police personnel have been deployed in the area around the SDM office. The agitation is being carried on peacefully under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Vyapari Sangarsh Samiti, about 500 metres from the SDM office.
Yesterday, the farmers' agitation turned violent as thousands of farmer laid seige in the Dhan Mandi area of the town. A pitched battle continued between farmers and policemen amid stone pelting, bursting of tear gas shells and firing in the air.
The farmers set fire to two police vehicles and beat up three policemen, seriously injuring two of them. Many other policemen and farmers were also hurt.
The district administration had imposed curfew in Gharsana and Rawla of Ganganagar district yesterday. But violating the curfew orders, the agitated farmers continued their protest.
The district administration is monitoring the situation.
