Campaigning hots up in Tiruchirapalli

Tiruchirappali, Oct 11: With just two days left for the first phase of the civic polls, electioneering has picked up momentum, both in urban and rural places here.

The candidates were carrying out intense street campaigning, door to door canvassing, distribution of pamphlets and addressing public meetings to attract the voters.

The elections has come as a boon for the auto drivers as the candidates were utilising the three-wheeler for propaganda in the city and suburbs.

Defying election rules and regulations, the workers of the contesting candidates were sticking posters in all the public places.

DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, actor-turned politician and DMDK founder Vijaykanth were the star campaigners for their respective parties.

The District Administration had geared up to conduct the two-phased polls in a free and fair manner.

Official sources told UNI that sensitive polling booths were identified and videography would be done during the polls.

As many as 629 polling booths and four counting centres has been set up for the 60 wards of the Tiruchirapalli Corporation.

Altogether 8,330 officials would be involved for election work in the rural local body elections and 1,200 for urban local body elections in the first phase on October 13.

In the second phase, the number of officials would be 3,805 for the urban local body elections, the sources added.
