Need to change process for selecting selectors: Chandrasekhar

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) Former national team selector VB Chandrasekhar has expressed the view that the BCCI should change the procedure for constituting the selection committee to improve the performance of the panel.

Chandershekher told Cricinfo Magazine that constitutional changes were needed to reform the current longstanding process.

''The key thing that needs to change is the process of selecting the selectors. That means a lot of changes to the constitution and only the BCCI can do that,'' he said.

''It is also important to have selectors who are strong. When you have a team management that is strong, it will run away with the process to a point where the selection committee becomes redundant.'' Looking back on his two year period as a national panel member, Chandrasekhar said there was both progress and failings.

''On the positive side the committee has given the right direction to what selection should be like. It took some tough decisions. The last year was good. The first year was full of stormy, long sessions. That made you feel that there were things outside of cricket that were controlling the basic decisions of people. That was wrong.

''The last year was straightforward in that there was a good understanding with the team. Having the selectors travel on tour helped,'' he said.

On the negative side, Chandrasekhar felt the committee may have become complacent when results went well.

''It did not evolve as much as it should have. Once we found a studious and responsible captain and a team management that was looking into every aspect of the game, the committee stopped evolving and stopped pushing for better results.

''I think the fact that we won so many matches in a row made us content. We stopped looking at options,'' he added.
