Curfew extended in trouble-torn in Mangalore
Mangalore, Oct 9: Curfew, which was to have ended at 1800 hrs today in Mangalore city, Mangalore Rural, Ullal and Konaje, has been further extended till 0700 hrs tomorrow following the assault of an youth by two persons here.
Dakshina Kannada district Superintendent of Police B Dayanand said the assault took place at J M Road in Bunder area here when curfew was relaxed for four hours this morning to enable the people to buy groceries and essential items.
However, barring this isolated incident, the overall situation was peaceful and under control, he said.
Earlier, curfew was relaxed for four hours in Mangalore city and rural, Ullal and Konaje as no fresh incidents of violence was reported overnight, Deputy Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao told UNI.
Union Minister of State for Home Prakash Jaiswal, Congress leader Janardhan Pujari and Union Minister Oscar Fernandes went round the areas affected by the communal clashes, that left two dead and 90 injured.
