Curfew extended for 24 hours in Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 8: Curfew was extended for 24 hours today as precautionary measure in riot torn Mangalore City, Rural, Ullal, Thokottu and Konaje areas which witnessed communal violence leading to death of two people and injury to more than 100 people since last four days.

Official sources said that the 48-hour curfew which was to end at 1630 hrs, was extended for 24 hours and will be relaxed for three hours tomorrow morning to facilitate public to purchase essential commodities. Depending upon the situation a decision would be taken tomorrow evening about extending or lifting of the curfew.

No untoward incident reported either during curfew relaxation period or after re imposition.

Shortage of essential commodities in provision stores were reported when people rushed to the shops during two hour curfew relaxation period from 0900 to 1100 hrs. Large crowds were seen in front of shops and Milk booths. Besides shortage, the public were made to shelve down heavy price for Rice, wheat Milk and other commodities as the sellers had increased the prices taking full advantage of the situation. Even News paper readers were made to pay more. Half a liter milk packet was sold at Rs 20 against Rs 12.

After re imposing the curfew the Rapid Action Force (RAF) personal took out Flag March to instill confidence among the public.

According to a report a van full of weapons was found near Bolar in the city. However, police declined to confirm the report.

Meanwhile, a peace committee meeting had been convened by Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and District Kannada Sahitya Parishat. Public were advised not to be carried away by rumours instead cooperate with the authorities in bringing normalcy.
