Bangla Bandh begins on peaceful note

Kolkata, Oct 09: The 12-hour All India Trinamool Congress(AITC) sponsored "Bangla Bandh" to protest the allged forceful acquisition of farmland at Singur for the Tata's small car unit project, began on a peaceful note evoking partial response from the general public.

While the CPI(M) and other constituents of the ruling Left Front have decided to oppose the dawn to dusk Bandh call, it was supported by the opposition Congress, the Socialist Unity Centre ofIndia(SUCI), Samajwadi Party,the Cpi-(ML)Liberation and the state unit of the BJP.

Though most of the shops, business establishments, educational institutions, banks and other financial institutions remained closed, attendance in most of the government offices in the city and elsewhere in the state was near normal.

Though State Transport Corporation buses were plying in large number all over the state, the number of private buses, mini buses and taxies were minimum in numbers primarily because of poor response from passengers.

Private vehicles were also plying in small numbers.

Though there were some reports of creating obstruction in suburban and long distance train services by the Bandh supporters in different stations causing severe inconvenience to the passengers, city's Metro rail services were operating normally though the number of passegers was much less than usual working days.

However, the sunshine sector of West Bengal, at Salt Lake, and Kolkata and Haldia ports functioned normally.

All domestic and international flights from the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum also operated normally since morning despite the Bandh call, official sources said.

Reports from most of the districts said the bandh had either minimum or no effect among the general public with most of the shops and business establishments remaining open since morning and the vehicles plying as usual.

In the hill areas of Darjereling district the Bandh failed to have any impact with the life remaining absolutely normal. All the tea gardens were also functioning normally.

Though the state administration had left no stone unturned to ensure uninterrupted supply of relief to thousands of flood affected people in several districts,in some areas including at Murshidabad reports of short supply of relief materials pouring in primarily because of because of the bandh.

However, there was no report of any untoward incident from any part of the state in conection with with the bandh as the state government had made enough secutiy arrangementsto ensure absolute peace.
