9 farmers commit suicide in Vidarbha in 24 hrs

Nagpur, Oct 9 (UNI) As many as nine farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha in the last 24 hours, activists here today said.

According to Vidarbha Jan Andolan Samiti (VJAS), a voluntary organisation working for the rights of farmers in the region, the nine farmers who took the extreme step included four from Yavatmal district, three from Amravati and two from Buldhana.

This had taken the number of suicides in Vidarbha since June 2005 to 962, VJAS said. This included 354 suicides since the announcement of the Prime Minister's relief package for the region's farmers on July one, last, it said in a statement here.
