TCS implements Digital Signage network
Mumbai, Oct 8: At a time, when the country's information technology (IT) sector is facing high attrition rates, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has come out with a novel idea to counter it by implementing Infinity Channel.
The Infinity Channel is an in-house digital signage network to enable information sharing and increase TCSers' awareness about their own company across countries, cities and ofices. Above all, it acts as a 'capability demonstrator' for the talents within and outside work, thus inspiring them to remain attached to the company they were working for.
Talking to UNI, Head-Internal Branding and Communications of the company, Harish Menon said, ''Even though the fact that the attrition rate was quite low in our company, we are implementing the global dynamic digital signage project network in our efforts to ensure the retention of staff. The project, on its completion, is expected to increase the bonding of the employees which will finally add the retention of staff.'' While 71,000 personnel are already on the rolls of the company, the end of the current financial year may see the joining of 30,000 new faces in addition to it.
Digital signage is a display device which is used as a sign to present constantly changing, computer generated, full motion video, photo realistic graphics, text and animation.
In fact, TCS has become a pioneer software firm in the country by connecting its various offices within the country and abroad through Infinity Channel, the technology for which has been provided by Scala Inc. Talking about it, Mr Menon says, ''Our intent is to use the TV channel in much more involved and dedicated manner as it completely relies on contents.'' While the main screen of the plasma TV sets, installed at Reception counter and cafeteria of various TCS offices in the country and abroad, will be running a particular programme, the scroll running in the bottom will show the share price status of the company. Similarly, the side bar in the left side of the screen can be customized as per the local requirements.
Suppose, you are watching the screen at a TCS office in Amsterdam, the side bar may read message' Welcome to TCS' Amsterdam office'.
Mr Menon said that though the project was already being run on a pilot project in few or our offices, we have plans to connect all of our offices in the world through the project in near future.
Surprisingly, the workforce deputed for the project comprises merely two staff which Mr. Menon says, ''Is working on various innovative approaches to make Infinity more interactive and enriching.'' When whether the company has got any plans to start external consultancy with the expertise gained and workfoprce ready? ''We can certainly look at it, but as we have completed only the phase one of the ambnitious project, it would be too early to say anything further,'' he replies.
