CEC to extend SIT through Edusat
Tiruchirapalli, Oct 8: The Consortium for Educational Communications (CEC) of Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry would extend Satellite Interactive Terminals (SIT) through the 'Edusat', an exclusive satellite for education to educational institutions across the country, from the next academic year.
The CEC's SIT, which disseminates e-content would be installed in private universities, teacher-education colleges, autonomous colleges and in ten universities (five colleages each) in the north-east, CEC Chairman E Balagurusamy told newspersons, here last night.
Mr Balagurusamy said, so far, 50 universities, including a few colleges and 17 Educational Media Resource Centres (EMRC) were provided with the facility, with a view to deliver skill-oriented educational activities in areas such as value-added courses, for which the institutions were unable to provide teaching support.
The choice of the institutions would be made by the CEC advisory board, comprising seven Vice-Chancellors, a representative of the HRD Ministry and four media experts or academics, he added.
The CEC was developing materials for e-content transmission through 'Vyas', the exclusive higher educational television channel of the HRD, the internet and the EDUSAT, he said.
Mr Balagurusamy said the CEC proposed virtual university would offer various skill-oriented diploma courses to the students in remote and tribal areas, which were beyond the reach of the territorial universities.
