Air Chief dispels report about dwindling IAF combat squadrons

Hindon, Ghaziabad, Oct 8 (UNI) In an bid to dispel reports about the dwindling strength of Indian Air Force combat squadrons, Chief of the Air Staff S P Tyagi today said the IAF was on the threshold of a quantum leap with the modernisation of its older fleets and the upcoming purchase of advanced multi-role fighters, mid-air refuellers, and airborne early warning and control systems.

''Licensed production of the SU-30 MKI is proceeding apace, as is the process of selecting the IAF's future multi-role combat aircraft. We expect the Hawk trainers to be inducted soon and the first squadron of the LCA during the XIth Plan,'' Air Chief Marshal Tyagi said, addressing the parade at the Hindon Airbase.

He said the IAF's combat strength was planned to measure-up to its challenges and responsibilities. Airlift capabilities would also be enhanced.

''Air defence is being strengthened with modern sensors and weapons systems. The Aerostat radars are close to operational status and the AWACS will be with us on schedule.'' On the modernisation plans, he said the older fleets would be upgraded which would enhance the life of the aircraft and provide them with all-weather capability.

''The upgradation of some of the fleets are well underway, and some are in the pipeline.'' He said the air defence communication network was also being modernised.

Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee will tomorrow dedicate to the nation the IAF's integrated materials management online system (IMMOLS).

The Air Chief said the IAF was a trans-oceanic force capable of protecting and projecting indian interests.

''Apart from being the guardian of Indian airspace and guaranteeing her territorial interets, the IAF also ensures the vital interests of a resurgent India, which extends well beyond its shores,'' He said the IAF can, as in the past, provide humanitarian assistance to friendly nations in distress.
