Shobha yatra marks Valmiki Jayanti celebrations

New Delhi, Oct 7: UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today flagged off a 'shobha yatra' from her 10, Janpath residence to mark Valmiki Jayanti.

Calling for following the Maharshi's teaching, Ms Gandhi said he showed the way to lead a real human life to the world by preaching the 'Ramayana'.

From the Delhi government's side, Health Minister Yoganand Shastri unveiled a statue of Maharshi Valmiki at Maharshi Balmiki Hospital at Pooth Khurd and said teachings of the saint were more relevant today with violence and intolerance on the rise.

''The Maharshi's teachings were a way out of this,'' he added.

BJP president Rajnath Singh while speaking at the National Headquarters in Maharishi Balmiki Prakastosava, organised by the party Pradesh S C Morcha, said Maharshi contributed to a great extent to uplift the Indian culture and society.

Calling upon the government to include the story of Valmiki's struggle in life and his contribution to social, cultural fields and incidents which have inspired us through ages in school syllabus, Mr Singh said the education imparted by him needs to be extended to all classes of society.
