Sensex down by 0.5 per cent for the week

Mumbai, Oct 7: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) lost 81 points or 0.5 per cent for the week, Nifty too lost 18.7 points or 0.5 per cent as US growth data impacted the global trend.

Sensex lost its ten week gaining streak when it lost 16 points on Friday, as cautious traders booked profit ahead of the second quarter results. However the week also saw 185 points jump in the index on Thursday as the Federal Reserve Chairman, Ben Bernanke reported that Housing rates have declined in US leading to decline in growth rate. This had a telling effect on all the global markets.

However, the market was mixed on other days with Monday being a Dussera holiday.

FIIs sold equities worth Rs 713.7 crore for two days (Tuesday and Wednesday), while mutual funds sold equities worth Rs 112.37 crore.

Tractor and utility vehicle maker Mahindra&Mahindra gained 3.2 per cent, to close at Rs 702.70, Tata Steel rose 0.23 per cent, to close at Rs 536.90, Index heavyweight Reliance Industries (RIL) was down 0.68 per cent, to close at Rs 1,163.05, Maruti Udyog slipped 3.92 per cent, to close at Rs 942.70, Bajaj Auto rose 3.3 per cent, to close at Rs 3,099.20, Tata Motors gained 3.6 per cent, to close at Rs 893.70.

Inflation for the week rose to 4.77 per cent compared to 4.6 per cent last week.

Total Forex reserve stood at US Dollar 165.305 billion.
