PCC extends full support to Bangla Bandh
Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) Putting to rest all speculation, West Bengal Pradesh Congress today extended total support to All India Trinamool Congress's (AITC) call for a statewide 12-hour Bangla Bandh on October 9.
''We are extending full support to the bandh because the opposition party has moral responsibility to stand behind when another opposition party was tortured by the police,'' PCC working president Pradip Bhattacharjee told mediapersons here.
He said the bandh would be peaceful and it will also be proved that people would not tolerate police intervention in a democratic movement.
''Earlier, we had approch the state government for setting up a land commission to identify the character of the land but yet to receive any response from them,'' he added.
''We are in favour of development in the state, but not at the cost of agricultural land,'' he said.
He said the party has decided to organise rally in favour of the bandh at Lebutala Park of Central Calcutta on November 7 and Hazra More of South Calcutta on November 8.
The AITC has been called the bandh to protest the alleged police attack on party supremo Mamata Banerjee, who upped the ante against the acquisition of agricultural land for the Tata Motors' small car project at Singur.
