JK Minister concerned over harassment of people

Srinagar, Oct 6: A senior Jammu and Kashmir Minister has expressed serious concern over complaints that the Army and other security forces were allegedly harassing the people by knocking at their doors during nights.

State Haj and Auqaf Minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed yesterday visited Ahlilan Balla, Gadole in Kokernag area to hand over two cheques of Rs 1 lakh each as ex-gratia relief to Hashim Ali Naikoo whose son and daughter were mistakenly killed by the Army on the intervening night of 3-4 October.

A large number of people there complained to him about the alleged harassment by the Army.

Responding to their complaints, he asked the people not to open doors during night hours and if any Army or security official resorted to excesses they should immediately approach the police station concerned or him.

''I have taken up the matter with Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and the Army authorities. They have assured me that night patrolling in these areas will soon be abandoned,'' said Mr Sayeed who is also the Jammu and Kashmir Congress Chief and represents the Kokernag constituency in the state Assembly.

He said the state government has already given clear directions to the Army and other security forces to deal militants with iron hand, but at the same time the innocent killing or harassment of peace-loving citizens would not be tolerated at any cost.

On the occasion, Deputy Commissioner, Anantnag G A Peer said he had talked to General Officer-in-Commanding of XV Corps Lt Gen S S Dhillon regarding the harassment of people by the Army personnel.

Mr Peer said the Corps Commander assured him that the people of the area would see a change on the ground within next three days.
