CPI activists arrested resorting to dharna

Hyderabad, Oct 6 (UNI) Over fifty CPI activists including party state secretary K Narayana were arrested when they staged a dharna near the secretariat, demanding among other things, a special package for Telangana.

Tension prevailed at the secretariat, when the procession of CPI workers which started from the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation office, tried to march towards the Secretariat.

A large posse of police force, which was deployed near the secretariat, halted the marchers. When the workers tried to break through the police barricade and enter the secretariat, police arrested Dr Narayana and other workers.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Narayana said there was no truth in the oft-repeated Government statements that crores of rupees were being spent on the development of backward areas.

He said his party would intensify the agitation, if the Government did not take steps for the development of the backward regions of the State.

Tension prevailed in Khammam when CPI workers tried to enter into the collectorate. Policemen who were was deployed in large numbers pushed back the agitators. Reports also came from all districts that the CPI local leaders staged dharnas at collectorates.

The CPI took up the agitation demanding a special package of Rs 10,000 crore for Telangana, re-constitution of Regional Development Boards for all the three regions of the state and strict implementation of GO 610, which stipulated repatriation of employees of other regions from Telangana.
