BSNL TN Circle has highest BTS: official

Tiruchirapalli, Oct 6 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Circle of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has the highest number of Base Tower Stations (BTS) in the country, BSNL Mobile Services General Manager (TN Circle) L Kannan said today.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Kannan said the Circle had over 1,869 BTS and stood second in number of mobile connections, next to Uttar Pradesh, with a whopping 18.34 lakh users.

Regarding BSNL's ''Family and Friend Scheme,'' which charges 10 paisa for a one minute call, he said more than eight lakh subscribers were availing the facility, accounting for nearly 50 per cent of the total mobile population.

After the introduction of the ten paise scheme, the mobile traffic had increased by 20 per cent, he added.

Asked about large-scale traffic congestion in BSNL services, he said the company was working hard on this by going in for capacity addition.

Sophisticated equipment would be installed to increase the capacity to 45 lakh over the next three years.

Towards this, BSNL would install over 176 BTS-- one BTS for every 100 population-- under a five-phase Programme.

Mr Kannan said the process was in tendering stage and all the 176 BTS would be erected by next year.

BSNL would introduce Broadband Multiple System through which movies could be downloaded from websites, he added.
