Tension prevails in Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 5 (UNI) Tension prevailed in the city since last night after a mini lorry allegedly carrying cows to a slaughter house hit a woman and a car, leading to stone pelting incidents in several areas here.

Protesting against the incident, the city unit of the Bajrang Dal had given a bandh call. All shops and business establishments downed shutters and buses remained off the roads. Schools and colleges had declared a holiday.

Superintendent of Police B Dayanand told UNI today that road blockades and stone pelting incidents were reported from various parts of the city. Atleast five vehicles and a shop were damaged in the violence. Additional police force had been deployed to maintain peace. However, the situation was now under control, he added.

Meanwhile, prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC were clamped in and around the city from this afternoon.

Police resorted to mild lathicharge at Farangipet on the outskirts of the city and at B C Road when an irate mob tried to block roads by burning tyres and pelted stones at passersby, injuring five people, including a policeman.

Police have rounded up several people in connection with the violence. Mr Dayanand said the total damage to property due to the violence was yet to be ascertained as also the total number of arrests. UNI
