KDS achieves all time record in handling container traffic
Kolkata, Oct 05 (UNI) Kolkata Dock System(KDS) under Kolkata Port Trust(KoPT) has scaled a new high by handling an all time record container traffic of 24,383 Tonnes during September 2006.
Announcing this KoPT Charman A K Chanda here today said KDS also registered a record growth of 28.63 per cent during last month compared to the handling of 18,956 tonnes of container traffic in September,2005, thereby setting a new landmark in handling the highest container traffic in a single month since its inception, surpassing its previous handling record of 21,309 TEUs handled in August, 2006.
So far as the performance of first fix months of the current fiscal year was concerned, the container traffic at KDS reveals an average growth rate of 17.25 per cent vis-a-vis the corresponding period of 2005-2006.
Significantly, in close juxtaposition with the above achievement, KoPT and Haldia Dock Complex had handled an all time record container traffic of 34,657 TEUs surpassing its previous record of 30,564 TEUs handled in August, 2006.
Dr Chnada said commodities that attributed to the growth of container traffic at KDS included electronic goods, food and food products, machinery and spare parts, metal ingots,polythene granules in the import leg and carbon black, iron &steel, leather goods, polythene products, jute and jute products, machinery and spares, tea from ICD Amingaon, ferrochrome from Orissa, cotton from Ludhiana.
Moreover,Dr.Chanda said Kolkata Port in its endeavour to attain customer satisfaction had introduced various user - friendly, cost effective measures to improveits efficency and quality of service.
