CUMI opens fourth manufacturing unit

Chennai, Oct 5 (UNI) Carborundum Universal Limited (CUMI), a leader in the abrasives and ceramics market and part of the 1.6 billion dollar Murugappa Group, today inaugurated its fourth coated abrasives manufacturing facility at Sriperumbudur, near here. Spread over 22.5 acres, with an investment of Rs 50 crore, the facility targetts the export market.

This world-class facility would enable CUMI to more than double its manufacturing capacity for coated abrasive products from 11 million sq mts to 25 million sq mts, and would offer significant improvement in product consistency and yield, giving CUMI the capability to produce the next-generation coated products.

CUMI Chairman M M Murugappan said with international acceptance of CUMI's coated products in Australia, Europe and North America, there was an increasing demand of newer requirements and designs.

With this facility, CUMI was equipped to deliver inimitable quality coated abrasives to markets worldwide, he added.

Stating that 73 per cent of the total consolidated revenue of carborundum companies was sold in India and 27 per cent abroad, Mr Murugappan said this would reverse in the next five years with the launch of the new facility.
