Two devotees drown during immersion of Durga idol

Barrackpore, Oct 3 (UNI) The body of a 22-year-old goldsmith was fished out from a pond near here today while search continued in the river Hooghly near Khardah for a 12th standard student, who was feared drowned during immersion of Durga Idol last night, police said.

Police said the 16-year-old student of Sukchar drowned in the Hooghly but the body was still untraced.

The body of the goldsmith of Barasat Purbapara was recovered from the Shunpukur, a pond where Purbapara Sporting club immersed their Durga idol last night. The victim was missing since last night, police said.

Barring the two incidents, the ceremonial immersion of Durga idols throughout the district passed off peacefully.

Devotees of both India and Bangladesh observing traditional Vijaya Dashami during immerson of hundreds of idols in the rivers Ichhamati and Kalindi where international border lines passed along the mid-stream of the rivers.

Apprehending untoward incident, BSF had imposed restrictions of movement of boats in the river Ichhamati at Taki, Itinda areas to avoid crossing of the international border.
