Kerala to release Neyyar Dam water to TN

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3 (UNI) The Kerala Government has decided to release water from the Neyyar Dam, near here, to Tamil Nadu.

In a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart M Karunanidhi, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said the decision was taken to to create a conducive atmosphere to dicussions on finding an amicable solution to the disputes on sharing of river water between the two states.

During the June ten meeting, Mr Karunanidhi had suggested that Neyyar Dam water be released to Tamil Nadu when Kerala demanded sharing water from the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, a release said here today.

The present decision was also on the basis of this demand, Mr Achuthanandan said.

He had also expressed his willingness for bilateral discussions, as directed by the Supreme Court, to solve the inter-state river water disputes, including Mullaperiyar, Parambikulam and Aliyar.

The Chief Minister said a team of ministers had been authorised to hold discussions with the Tamil Nadu and urged Mr Karunanidhi to suggest suitable time and place for the discussions, it added.
