It's not EC's duty to investigate: LS Speaker
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 3 (UNI) Terming it 'unfortunate', Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today said it was not the duty of the Election Commission to investigate the issue of office of profit.
Talking to newspersons when asked to comment on the EC notice to Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh on a complaint seeking his disqualification as a Rajya Sabha member on the office of profit issue, the Speaker said here the Constitution should be amended to give clear guidelines on the issue.
However, it was unfortunate that an adjudicating authoritiy, like the police department, had investigated the issue, he added.
Earlier, inaugurating an orientation programme for Members of the Kerala Legislative Assembly here, Mr Chatterjee said welfare of the people should be the ultimate and common goal of every member.
He said every member of the legislature should be known for his competence, integrity, discipline and for being dedicated to the common causes - the welfare of the people who had bestowed on them the great responsibility of representing them in the governance of society.
He also advised the media to ignore the unruly scenes in legislatures and focus on the perfomance of members.
