India to get 33 new stem cell transplant centres
New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) Thirty-three new stem cell transplantation centres will be opened soon in the country, Armed Forces Medical Services Director General Vice-Admiral VK Singh today said.
Admiral Singh was inaugurating a national conference on stem cell transplant here.
The conference was attended by haematologists from the armed forces and civil sector.
Stem cell transplant is used to restore the body's capability to fight against diseases by replacing non-functioning bone barrow.
There is no organ loss like in kidney and liver transplant.
Stem cells can be sourced from the bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood for conventional stem cell transplantation.
