Gammon bags contract for new bridge over Brahmaputra

Guwahati, Oct 3 (UNI) The Construction major Gammon India Limited has bagged the contract for the fifth bridge over the Brahmaputra river at Guwahati with a cost of Rs 238 crore.

This was informed by Mr Vijay Singh, Secretary Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport&Highways, on his visit to Asom last week.

Constructed under the East West Corridor project, the new road bridge will be just 40 mt south of the existing Saraighat bridge.

The Ministry had contacted the Prime Minister's office to synchronise the possibility of getting the foundation laid in month of November when the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was supposed to visit Asom.

The contract period for this new bridge construction was just 42 months and the bridge is slated to be operational by the January 2010.

Giving broad a layout of the bridge, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials, who were present during the briefing, said there would be a flyover in the Guwahati end to contact the approach of the bridge and the existing roads.

The flyover has 6-lane carriageway and each 3-lane carriageway has separate foundations, substructure and superstructure. The total length of fly over is 243 mt consisting of three modules.
