Coffin scam hearing deferred til October 16

New Delhi, Oct 3 (UNI) The Supreme Court has deferred the hearing in the Kargil Coffingate scam till October 16 after authorities pleaded that the investigations were still under way.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal allowed the CBI's request and adjourned the hearing till October 16. Earlier, the matter was listed for hearing on September 29.

During the last hearing, the apex court had pulled up the investigating agency for not doing enough to bring the culprits to book. Senior defence and army officials and the then Defence Minister George Fernandes are also under scanner for their alleged role in the 2100 crore scam.

The apex court had directed the authorities concerned to file a status report regarding action taken against the accused.

Mr Fernandes had to resign after the scam surfaced. The then Prime Minister A B Vajpayee also came under fire for giving clean chit to Mr Fernandes.
