Churchill outplay Vasco 2-0, keeps unbeaten record intact
Mapusa, Goa, Oct 3 (UNI) Title aspirant Churchill Brothers scored once in each half to register 2-0 win over Vasco Sports club and kept their unbeaten record intact in the Hutch GFA's Professional Football league championship match being played here at Duler ground.
With this win Churchill Brothers jumped on at the top of the table with 24 points from 10 outings followed by Sporting Club de Goa with 22 points with one match less. Vasco Sports Club remained on 14 points from as many matches.
Churchill who dominated the proceedings throughout the match drew first blood in the 13th minute through Bernard Peres, when Vinu Jose unleashed a shot which hit the goal post and deflected towards Peres, who was lurking inside the goal pounced upon the opportunity and shot into the net to make 1-0.
Churhill continued to attack in the second session too and increased their lead in the 83rd minute through Odafa Okeye, after collecting a ball from Joseph Martin Luis at the top the box and dodged past couple of rival defenders and also deceived Goalkeeper and scored second goal for his side.
Churchill could have been up by much bigger margin had not Vasco's goalkeeper Vivek Gupta brought off couple of good saves especially in the second half.
Vasco had a chance to reduce the margin in the 54th minute but Churchill goalkeeper Vinay Singh brought off a brilliant save off a free kick taken by Kamal Thappa.
Churchill's Odafa Okeye was later adjudged the man of the match for his fine performance.
