Asom cop faces flak over buffalo sacrifice

Guwahati, Oct 3 (UNI) Animal rights activists in Asom have filed a case against a senior police official for sacrificing a buffalo at a temple during Durga puja rituals this year.

The People for Animal, Guwahati chapter, has filed a case against Nalbari district Superintendent of Police, Dilip Dey who had sacrificed a buffalo during Durga puja at Billeswar Temple at Belsor in the district.

Mrs Sangeeta Goswami of People for Animal informed that a case Under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, was lodged with the police against Nalbari district SP. She said it was unbecoming of a senior police official to sacrifice a buffalo in the name of religion.

The animal rights activist rued the 'indifferent' attitude of the Asom government towards effective implementation of law provisions meant for protection of animal rights and vowed to launch a statewide campaign soon against sacrifice of animals in the name of religion.

Sacrificing animals and birds during Durga puja has been an age-old practice in temples spread all over the state. Large number of devotees sacrifice animals, birds at the historic Kamakhya Temple as part of Durag puja rituals. This year more than 20 buffaloes besides other animals and birds were sacrificed during puja at the Shakti shrine at Kamakhya.
