UP Guv, CM remember 'Bapu' on Gandhi Jayanti

Lucknow, Oct 2 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Governor T V Rajeswar and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today said Mahatma Gandhi's ideals on truth and non-violence were still relevant and successful weapons to remove povery and violence from the world.

''We can end the exploitation and injustice through satyagrah,'' they observed.

The Governor and the CM were addressing a programme organised on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti here after offerring their tributes by garlanding the Mahatma's picture.

Mr Rajeswar said although the principles of truth, non-violence and 'satyagrah' had completed 100 years, the Gandhian ideology was still relevant against poverty and violence.

Earlier, Mr Yadav said the ideals of honesty, truth and patriotism of the Mahatma were adopted by the country for independence struggle against imperialism.

He said through the uplift of poor, destitute and other weaker sections, they could offer our tributes to Gandhiji in real terms.

Mr Yadav said to wipe terrorism and turmoil from the world, it was imperative that the path of non-violence shown by the great leader be adopted.

The Samajwadi Party chief observed that imperialist forces were hatching the conspiracy against the language and culture of India and their nefarious designs could be countered by following the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi.

He expressed concern that Hindi was not getting its due importance. ''We should seriously ponder over the question as to how far we have become successful in implementing the ideals of 'Bapu' after independence,'' he said, adding the path of self-reliance shown by Gandhi should be followed.

While paying homage to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, the CM said he was a man of simplicity and achieved new heights with his strong character, simplicity and honesty.

Mr Shastri's birth anniversary also falls on October 2.

''He raised the slogan of 'Jai Jawan-Jai Kisan' and considered that unless the borders of the country were protected there would be no peace. By following the ideals of Shastri, we can make ourselves a prosperous country,'' Mr Yadav added.
