Tributes paid to Mahatma on 137 birth anniversary
Puducherry, Oct 2: Floral tributes were paid to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 137th birth anniversary in the Union Territory today.
Puducherry Lt Governor, Mukut Mithi, Chief Minister N Rangasamy, his cabinet collegues, Speaker R Radhakrishnan, Parliament members from Puducherry, legislators and senior officals of the territorial administration, were among those, who garlanded the statue of the 'Mahatma' on the Goubert Avenue here.
Patriotic songs were sung, scriptures from holy books were read and all-religio prayers were conducted at the pedestal of the statue.
Leaders of several political parties also garlanded the statue to mark the occasion.
Earlier, tributes were paid to a decorated portrait of the 'Apostle of peace' at the Puducherry Pradesh Congress Committee(PCC) office here. PCC President P Shanmugham, Mr Rangasamy, ministers, legislators and PCC office-bearers paid tributes to the portrait of Mahatma.
The Chief Minister also honoured freedom fighters on the occasion.
