Signals stun Dempo, Salgaocar edge out Velsao
Margao, Oct 2 (UNI) Bottom placed Corps of Signals shocked defending champions Dempo Sports Club 2-1 to register their first win in the Hutch GFA Professional football league championship match being played at Fatorda stadium here today.
In another match played at Tilak ground in Vasco da Gama, former champions Salgaocar Sports Club edged out Velsao Pale 2-1 and gained full points.
Signals Corps started full steam and shot into the lead in the 15th minute through S K Murshidde to make it 1-0.
Signals increased their lead in the 33rd minute, when Vallarian Rebello scored an own goal in trying to clear a cross by Surajit Mondal.
Trailing by two goals at the breather, Dempo played with renewed vigour and reduced the margin in the 55th minute through Jery Zirsangha, whose header following a flag kick taken by Clifford Miranda.
Later, Dempo made a series of attack at the rival citadel to level the margin, but Signals goalkeeper Bimal Kumar Das made a couple of good saves.
At Vasco, Salgaocar shot into the lead in the 12th minute through Agnelo Barreto off a pass from Nicholas Colaco.
After cross over, Desmond Fernandes restored the parity to make it 1-1.
Salgaocar's Patric Okonji increased the lead in the 66th minute, who after dribbling past couple of rival defenders shot into the net to make it 2-1.
With today's win, Salgaocar jumped to the third spot with 20 points from 11 outings. They are below table toppers Sporting Club de Goa with 22 points and Churchill Brothers with 21 points from 9 outings each.
Dempo were relegated to the fourth place with 19 points from 12 outings. They are followed by Vasco with 14, Velsao Pale with 11, Raia Sporting with 10 and Signals at the bottom with 5 points.
