Kullu Dussehra begins in HP

Kullu, Oct 2 (UNI) Observing that Himachal Pradesh was a land of Gods and Goddesses, Governor V S Kokje today said such a culture provided the state a unique identity among other states of the country.

Speaking after inaugurating the international festival here, he urged the people to preserve this ancient culture, which had a distinct identity, which would give a boost to religious tourism in the state.

Thousands, led by Mahaeshwar Singh, descendent of former King of Kullu, pulled the wooden chariot of Lord Rama using long ropes from its fixed place in Dhalkpur Maidan to another spot across the maidan.

The pulling of the chariot on the first day of the festival is considered auspicious and people travel long distances to participate in the ritual.

Earlier, 200 deities from various parts of the district assembled in the Maidan to participate in the festival.

Agriculture Minister and President of the Dussehra Festival Committee Raj Kishan Gaur, HPMC Chairman and MLA Ishwar Dass, MLA Khimi Ram and other prominent people were also present on the occasion.

Meanwhile, Dussehra festival was celebrated with traditional fervour and gaiety throughout the state today.

Dussehra symbolises the victory of good over evil and leads people on to the path of truth and honesty, he said after lighting the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarana and Meghnath.

The government would provide adequate funds for the repair and maintenance of the streets and drains that were damaged due to heavy rains during the monsoon season, he said on the occasion.
