CM leads AP in remembering Mahatma Gandhi
Hyderabad, Oct 2 (UNI) Floral tributes to the Father of the Nation, All Religion prayer meeting, distribution of fruits to old and ill, honouring veteran Gandhians marked the observance of the Gandhi Jayanti across Andhra Pradesh today.
Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy led the State in observing the 137th birth anniversary by garlanding the Statue of Mahatma Gandhi, a replica of the one in Parliament, at the Assembly premises.
Dr Reddy recalled the Satyagraha movement launched by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in South Africa when he was thrown out of a train, which influenced the course of struggles against oppressions all over the world, including India.
Floral tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi at the Bapu Ghat at Langerhouz, as also in the Gandhi Bhavan, the headquarters of the Congress party in the State.
The 102nd birth anniversary of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was also celebrated.
Bhagavad Gita, Quran and Bible were rendered. Bhajans, dear to Mahatma Gandhi were sung on the occasion.
Participating in the celebrations at the Gandhi Bhavan, PCC President K Keshava Rao assured all help to the Gandhi Bhavan Trust for setting up a Gandhian Research Centre.
Noted Gandhians and freedom fighters were honoured on the occasion.
Reports of Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations kept coming from all over the State.
