Turkey recall Gokdeniz for Euro qualifiers

ISTANBUL, Oct 1 (Reuters) Turkey have recalled Trabzonspor midfielder Gokdeniz Karadeniz for Euro 2008 qualifiers against Hungary and Moldova a year after he was banned for his role in a betting scandal.

Coach Fatih Terim named a 24-man squad for the matches away to Hungary on October. 7 and against Moldova on October. 11.

The Moldova match will be played at the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt as part of a punishment imposed by world soccer's governing body FIFA, under which Turkey must play three home matches behind closed doors on neutral territory.

FIFA handed out the punishment after Turkey's players were involved in a brawl in the World Cup qualifying playoff second leg against Switzerland in Istanbul last November.

''I'm proud that I will be a national player again after a long break. If the boss gives me a chance I will do what I can.

I won't let him down,'' Gokdeniz said.

The Turkish Football Federation suspended Gokdeniz from playing for 10 months in September. 2005.

He was one of five players banned by the federation's disciplinary board over their involvement in betting on a match between Akcaabat Sebatspor and Kayserispor in the previous season.

Terim has also recalled to his attack Umit Karan, who scored both Galatasaray's goals in their 3-2 defeat against Liverpool in the Champions League on Wednesday.
