BSNL set to overhaul telephony system

Kohima, Oct 1: By the end of its seventh year in service, the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), under North East Telecom Circle II has offered 54.7 lakh customers at 6.5 per hundred population against the national average of 5.6 per hundred.

Speaking at a programme at Dimapur by Chief General Manager Telecom (CGMT) P R Ananthan said all the C-DOT exchanges would also be updated with the latest version of equipments.

The North East Telecom Circle II (NETC-II) has its services in Nagaland, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, has been providing telecom services to over an area of 1.2 lakh Sq. Kms. It has 217 telephone exchanges functioning in three states. BSNL is expected to add another 17 more exchanges. Informing a 5000-lines Trunk Exchange has been commissioned in Manipur. Similar 5000-line Trunk Exchange would be installed in Kohima by the end of 2006, he said.

In an effort to improve its service network, the WLL system would have both prepaid and SMS facility shortly, the BSNL announced and added that another 24 BTS towers for mobile system would be added to existing 175.
