UP DGP warns cops having nexus with criminal

Lucknow, Sep 30 (UNI) Claiming substantial improvement in law and order of Uttar Pradesh, Director General of Police (DGP) Bua Singh today warned of strict action against policemen having a nexus with criminals.

Promising to act tough on errant cops, the DGP said no policeman would be spared if found involved in any criminal activity. ''A drive has already been launched in this regard.'' The assertion of the state police chief comes in wake of recent shocking incident, in which the policemen of Special Operation Group (SOG) of Lucknow were found involved in a case of gold robbery.

The police administration had identified over 180 policemen with dubious track record, Mr Singh told reporters here.

Overall the cases against 70 cops had been registered, while 35 uniformed persons dismissed from service. In various cases, about 145 policemen had been suspended on various charges, while 50 others sent to jail since January, the DGP informed.

Mr Singh was all praises for the efforts of Special Task Force (STF) of UP Police, which was responsible for gunning down as many as 59 notorious criminals and arresting 250 such elements this year.

Encouraged by the STF efficiency, the UP government has decided to open six field units of this elite force at Agra, Varanasi, Meerut, Kanpur, Gorakhpur and Allahabad, besides equipping the force with ultramodern weaponry.

He said while many naxalites and dacoits like Nirbhay Gujjar had been killed by cops, dreaded brigand Dadua was the next target of the state police.
