Infections leads to complication in cataract surgery-expert

Sambalpur, Sep 30 (UNI) An infection has led to the complication in the cataract operation of 14 people at the Deogarh District Hospital last fortnight in which two persons so far had lost their vision.

VSS Medical College and Hospital Ophthalmology Department Professor Dr.Guna Sagar Dash,who conducted an inquiry into the incident as per the direction of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has stated that the infection during the post operation stage led to the complications.

Dr.Dash who visited the Deogarh Hospital and met the victims said the infection might have taken place either in the Operation theatre and ward or at home.

He however,failed to pinpoint the exact placeof the infection, that led to the complication of nine of 14 people who underwent cataract operation at the Deogarh Hospital under the National Blindness Eradication Programme on September 13 and 14 last under the supervision of Dr.Bidyadhar Sahu..

Official sources said four of the 14 operated for cataract developed severe pain and other complications and were referred to the VSS Medical College and Hospital for treatment.

The condition of two of them were was so critical that that the doctors had no other option but to remove their eyes.The rest seven people brought to the Hospital were still undergoing treatment Meanwhile,five more people who also underwent the cataract operation were admitted to the Hospital yesterday for better treatment.

Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while expressing his concern over the incident directed that the state government would bear all the medical treatment of the victims.

Meanwhile,Deogarh Parliament Member Dharmendra Pradhan visited VSS Medical College and Hospital and enquired about the condition of the patients.He had demanded exemplary actions against erring doctors and criticised Deogarh district administration for its indifferent attitude towards poor people.
