Curfew imposed in 5 km border belt in JK

Srinagar, Sep 30: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to continue night curfew and imposed restrictions under section 144 Cr PC in the entire border district of Kupwara.

An official spokesman said the District Magistrate Kupwara has imposed section 144 Cr P C in the district for one month with immediate effect banning assembly of four or more persons or taking out processions in the district.

However, for religious and other functions, prior permission can be obtained from the authorities.

Essential services have been excluded from the section 144 Cr P C.

He said night curfew effective from 2300 hours to 0300 hours will remain imposed in the whole district including the area falling within five kms of the border belt.

Night curfew was imposed in the district, once the hub of insurgency, to curb the movement of militants under the cover of darkness.

The authorities have instructed the villagers to step out of their houses with lanterns during the night in case of an emergency.

More than a dozen people were killed by security forces due to mistaken identity after they moved out of their houses without any lantern during the past two years.
