Stay in Pinky case declined

Chandigarh, Sep 29 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today declined to stay the ongoing proceedings in the Yamuna Nagar district court in the case wherein Punjab police Inspector Gurmit Singh Pinky and five other accused have been facing murder charges in connection with the killing of Avtar Singh at Ludhiana on January 7, 2001.

Following this directive by the high court's division bench of Justices Surinder Singh Nijjar and Surinder Singh Saron, the Yamunanagar District and Sessions Judge would now be free to pronounce the verdict on Saturday as the same was adjourned for a day on the pleas of accused.

The verdict in the matter was due to be announced today but the accused had sought adjournment, saying the high court was hearing their writ petition for stay and transfer of the case at the Yamuna Nagar court.

The case was initially transferred for hearing from Ludhiana to Chandigarh where three courts had shifted the same and the matter was thereafter sent to Kurukashetra DSJ on prayer of the complainant. The same was transferred again to the Yamunanagar court, amidst allegations that the accused were attempting to influence the judicial officer concerned.
