Selection panel for UP local body polls

New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) Congress President Sonia Gandhi, in consultation with AICC General Secretary incharge of Uttar Pradesh Ashok Gehlot and State PCC President Salman Khurshid, today formed a campaign committee and a selection committee for the local body elections in Uttar Pradesh to be held next month.

The campaign committee consists of zone incharge-or convenor, UPCC office bearers belonging to the zone, UPCC office aearers in charge of division, local MPs, MLAs, ex-MPs, ex-MLAs and ex-MLCs,all outgoing district president and CCC Presidents, any local senior leader to be designated by UPCC or zone incharge not covered under any head above.

The Selection Committee consists of incharge of eight zones, Vice Presidents, General Secretaries incharge of division, local MPs, MLAs and ex-peoples representatives, district president, city president, outgoing district president and city president, UPCC Observer and block president.

Mr Gehlot told UNI that the Congress was taking the local body elections as a preparation for the Vidhan Sabha elections to be held in February next.

He said the procedure for selecting candidates had been decentralised this time with decisions to be taken at the district level and block level.

Mr Gehlot charged that the Mulayam Singh government was running away from local body elections but it was only after the High Court intervened that the state government agreed to hold elections.

As many as 12 Nagar Nigams, 193 Nagar Palikas and 420 panchayats will go to polls on October 28, 31 and November 6. The counting will take place on November 6.
