Move to develop SEZs not given up: Cong

New Delhi, Sep 29: The Congress today justified the move for developing Special Economic Zones as a means of economic development and clarified that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had never pleaded for the move to be abandoned in CMs' Conclave in Nainital.

Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here that Mrs Gandhi had only emphasised that precaution should be taken in acquiring land from the farmers for the purpose.

The process of developing SEZs was on and guidelines had been issued, he said, adding the Government clearly defined the safegurads.

Mr Singhvi said as far as possible, cultivable land should not be acquired from farmers threatening their livelihood.
