CBI chargesheets R K Jain in Tehelka Tape case
New Delhi, Sep 29 (UNI) The CBI filed a chargesheet today against former Samata Party treasurer R K Jain in the Tehelka Tape case of 2001 relating to alleged corruption in defence deals.
The chargesheet, under section nine of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (taking gratification for exercise of personal influence with public servants), was filed in the Court of Special Judge (CBI), an agency spokesman said.
Investigations revealed that Mr Jain demanded bribe from Tehelka.com -- who were representing a fictitious firm, M/s West End International -- to influence the then Defence Minister in order to get them an order for supply of Hand Held Thermal Imagers to the Armed Forces, he said.
A forensic opinion on the ten relevant Tehelka tapes established their authenticity and proved the voices and images of Mr Jain and of the Tehelka team, the spokesman said.
The CBI had earlier also chargesheeted former BJP President Bangaru Laxman and a dismissed Staff Officer of Ordinance Factory Cell, Ministry of Defence Production, in the case.
The agency had registered a case in connection with the expose on February two, last year when all Tehelka tape matters were referred to it by the Government after the Justice Phukan Commission of enquiry was wound up.
