Sensex up by 14 pts as banking scrips lead recovery

Mumbai, Sep 28: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) in a range bound trade baulked under sales pressure as September derivatives contracts closed today, however the all time high performance by Banking sector led the index to close 14 points up at 12,380.74.

The S&P CNX Nifty however lost 7.55 points or 0.2 per cent to close at 3,571.75.

Amongst the sectoral indices on BSE, except banking sector which was up by 3.70 per cent and IT Metals and PSU which too gained marginally, all other sectors on the BSE closed down in the red between 0.18 to 0.84 per cent.

The breadth in the broader market was positive in favour of 1,355 advances as against 1,134 declines out of total 2553 scrips that traded the BSE counters today.

Meanwhile, a bounce back in crude prices weighted down refiners.

US crude oil price rose to a 7-day high of above US Dollar 63 a barrel amid speculation that OPEC may cut output. HPCL lost three per cent, BPCL shed 1.5 per cent and Indian Oil Corporation shed 1.7 per cent.

Major gainers on the index were HDFC up by 3.72 per cent to Rs 1,500.50, HDFC Bank up by 3.20 per cent to Rs 927.55, SBI up by 2.95 per cent to Rs 1,028.85, ICICI up by 2.94 per cent to Rs 708.40, Ranbaxy Lab up by 2.21 per cent to Rs 430.35, Hero Hondaup by 1.37 per cent to Rs 789.10, Infosys up by 1.14 per cent to Rs 1,856.45, Tata Steel up by 0.64 per cent to Rs 518.95, Wipro was up by 0.24 per cent to Rs 521.50, and NTPC was up by 0.12 per cent.

Besides the losers were L&T down by 51.05 per cent to Rs 1,267.50, TCS was down by 2.25 per cent to Rs 1,018.90, Maruti Udyog was up by 2.19 per cent to Rs 942.40, Dr Reddy's Lab was down by 2.01 per cent to 723.15, Satyam Computers was down by 1.98 per cent to Rs 815.20, Reliance Communications was down by 1.79 per cent to Rs 340.00, Gujarat Ambuja was down by 1.54 per cent to Rs 115.35, Bharti Airtel was down by 1.10 per cent to Rs 471.10, HLL was down by 1.05 per cent to Rs 255.00 and Tata Motors was down by 0.98 per cent to Rs 842.45.
