Geelani put under house arrest in Kashmir

Srinagar Sep 28: Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) Syed Ali Shah Geelani was put under house arrest this afternoon, official sources said.

They said a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside the Hyderpora residence of Mr Geelani to prevent him to move out.

A spokesman of the HC Aiyaz Akbar told UNI Mr Geelani was informed by a senior police officer that he has been put under house arrest.

He said the police officer informed Mr Geelani that he cannot go out of his house till further orders.

Mr Akbar said Mr Geelani was scheduled to visit Sopore to meet the family members of Afzal Guru, the prime accused in the December 13, 2001 Parliament attack case.

A Delhi court has passed an order to hang Guru till death in Tihar jail on October 20.

Mr Geelani has also given a general strike call for tomorrow against the Delhi courts order.
