Varanasi, Sep 27 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Human Rights Commission today assured Banaras Hindu University (BHU) students it would probe the alleged human rights violation during the recent lathicharge on students by the central varsity security personnel.

A delegation of students led by Avdhesh Dikshit including heavily bandaged Satish Rai -- a BHU student injured in September 19 lathicharge -- met the UPHRC member S V M Tripathi this evening.

They briefed Mr Tripathi about the lathicharge on BHU students agitating for restoration of students union.

When informed by students that they had already petitioned the UPHRC over the issue, Mr Tripathi assured of probing their case, after suitable examination of the petition.

The students were accompanied by Lallan Tiwari and Shail Kumari Devi, parents of Pramod Tiwari -- a BHU student. The students further alleged Lallan Tiwari, a native of Chapra (Bihar) was also attacked by the proctorial board personnel on the varsity campus on September 19.

Earlier, the UPHRC member visited the Kashi Vishwanath temple following a complaint by former Uttar Pradesh minister Shatrudra Prakash, alleging violation of right to freedom of religion, especially in light of shifting of an idol of 'Deepalakshami' from the temple's sanctun sanctorum.

Refusing to comment on the fate of Mr Prakash' petition, the UPHRC member said the contentions of Mr Prakash and district and temple trust officials have been received by the Commission, which will now study them at length.

Mr Tripathi, however, did not rule out the possibility of a two-judge UPHRC bench hearing the matter, where it has been alleged that shifting of the idol, which holds the 'Akhand Deep' in the temple sanctum sanctorum amounted to infringment of 'Karamkand' and consequently the violation of right to religious freedom.

''If necessary, however, a two-judge Commission bench might here the petition'', he said.
