Panchayat President announces resignation

Kottayam, Sep 27 (UNI) Kottayam District Panchayat President Thomas Kunnappally (UDF) today announced his decision to resign from the post after the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) lost majority in the 23 member council.

Mr Thomas Kunnappally said at the council meeting that he would submit his resignation tomorrow. Vice President Sudha Kurian would also resign tomorrow.

The decision to resign was taken following the debacle at the by-election.

Now in the 23 members Council UDF had only 11 members.

Meanwhile, the newly elected LDF member, S Prabhakara Kurup was sworn-in as a member of the council. President Thomas Kunnappally administered the oath.

UDF members abstained from the swearing in ceremony alleging widespread malpractice in the by-election. Later they staged a dharna before the Panchayat office.
