Orissa Child labourers tortured in Mumbai:Desmukh assures action

Bhubaneswar, Sep 27 (UNI) Maharashtara Chief Minister Vilasrao Desmukh has assured his Orissa counterpart Naveen Patnaik to take strong action against the persons involved in torturing the child labourers in a bangle factory in Mumbai.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who discussed the inhuman torture of child labourers from Ganjam with Mr Desmukh before leaving for New Delhi this afternoon, demanded an inquiry into the barbaric incident.

The Maharastra Chief Minister assured Mr Patnaik that a detailed inquiry would be conducted into the incident and the culpriits would be punished.

Ten child labourers from Tanhar village in Ganjam district, who had gone to Mumbai to work in a bangle factory, were subjected to inhuman torture by the owners of the factory.

The children, who were rescued by some of their parents with the help of a social worker, on their arrival at Berhampur yesterday narrated that they were beaten up by the owners of the bangle factory when they come to know that they had contacted their homes and informed about the torture and poor working conditions in the factory.

The child labourers had sustained burn injuries on their bodies.

Incidentally, the owners of the bangle factory were three brothers from the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's Assembly constituency in Hinjuli in Ganjam district.

Meanwhile, the officials from the District Labour Department had visited the village for an on the spot investigation into the incident and provided medical treatment free of cost to the child labourers.

The District collector had also promised the parents of the child labourers to take action against the culprits.
