ONGC moves into quarter-final
Chandigarh, Sep 27 (UNI) Playing their first match having seeded straight into pre-quarter-final round, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation justified their seeding as they outplayed Chandigarh Administration-run Chandigarh Hockey Academy by 3-1 in the 36th S N Vohra's All India Gurmit Memorial Hockey Tournament here today.
They will now face powerful Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited in the quarter-final on September 29. On the basis of their performance in the last edition of the tournament, BPCL along with holders Punjab and Sind Bank, Indian Oil Corporation and Namdhari XI were given bye into quarter-finals.
ONGC got an early shock as Chandigarh Hockey Academy forced their first penalty corner and Dharamvir Singh converted with ease in the fifth minute. The CH Academy just managed to hold on to the slender lead till the 32nd minute when Amarjit Singh scored a field goal to place ONGC at par.
Maintaining their pressure, ONGC struck again four minutes later and through Amarjit Singh who found the gap in the CH Academy defence with a reverse shot. ONGC then forced their second penalty corner in the 55th minute and Anurag Raghuwanshi converted it with a drag flick.
