Nineteen candidates in fray for TN Assembly Bypoll

Madurai, Sep 27 (UNI) Following an independent withdrawal from the contest, 19 candidates, including those of the ruling DMK, opposition AIADMK and the DMDK supremo and filmstar Vijaykant, are in the fray for the October 11 byelection to the Madurai Central Assembly Constituency.

Today being the last day for withdrawal of nominations, an independent candidates withdrew his papers.

While the DMK has fielded City Corporation Deputy Mayor S S Ghouse Basha, the AIADMK has nominated party District Secretary and former MP, V Rajan Chellappa, while M R Panneerselvam is contesting on the DMDK ticket.

The bypoll was necessitated, following the sudden demise of DMK stalwart and HR and CE Minister P T R Palanivel Rajan on May 20, a day after he was inducted into the Karunanidhi cabinet.

As per the schedule, polling would be held on October 11 with counting of votes slated for October 17.
